How to put a dog muzzle on: a 3-step guide

Wearing a muzzle is not mandatory for all dogs. However, teaching your companion to wear one from a young age is a real asset, both for their safety and for your daily peace of mind.

You never know when your dog might need to wear a muzzle: a visit to the vet, a train ride, or even behavioral training. You might as well teach them before you actually need it.

How to measure for a dog muzzle?

Choosing the right size muzzle is essential. A muzzle that is too small will be uncomfortable, while one that is too large may not fulfill its purpose.

To take your dog's measurements, use a soft measuring tape.

1. Measure the length of the snout

Measure the distance from the tip of the nose to the line of the eyes.

2. Measure the snout circumference

Measure the circumference of the widest part of the snout, just below the eyes, with the mouth closed.

Do not tighten the tape too much: leave a slight margin so that the muzzle remains comfortable.

3. Measure the height of the snout

Using a ruler, measure the height of the snout at its highest point.

4. Measure the width of the snout

Finish by measuring the width of the snout at its widest point.

Once you have all the measurements, refer to the manufacturer's size guide to choose the most suitable muzzle for your dog.

How to get your dog to accept a muzzle?

Your dog will not naturally enjoy wearing a muzzle. This is perfectly normal: they are discovering a new object on their snout.

The goal is therefore to have them associate the muzzle with something positive through positive reinforcement.

Before starting, get a soft basket muzzle, which is ideal for training as it allows the dog to take treats.

Step 1: Get them to put their snout in

Take a treat and pass it through the muzzle.

Driven by greed, your dog will naturally go after the reward by sliding their snout inside.

Repeat this exercise several times without trying to fasten the muzzle.

Step 2: Fasten then remove immediately

When your dog easily puts their snout into the muzzle, fasten it for just a few seconds.

Remove it immediately, then reward them.

The goal is for them to understand that there is nothing unpleasant about wearing a muzzle.

Step 3: Gradually increase the duration

Once your dog accepts the muzzle, leave it on for a few minutes in a quiet and familiar environment.

Continue to reward them regularly while they are wearing it.

Little by little, increase the duration of the sessions.

To help your dog forget about their muzzle completely, offer them an activity they enjoy:

• a walk;
• a training session;
• play;
• a treat-seeking game.

They will quickly associate the muzzle with enjoyable moments.

Why does a dog wear a muzzle?

Contrary to popular belief, a dog does not necessarily wear a muzzle because they are aggressive.

It can be used in many situations:

• To comply with the law, if your dog belongs to category 1 or 2.
• To comply with the regulations of certain transport companies (train, ferry, cable car...).
• To secure a delicate situation, such as a visit to the vet or a medical treatment.

How long does it take to train my dog to wear a muzzle?

It all depends on the dog.

Some will understand in a few days, while others will need several weeks.

The most important thing is to respect their pace and never rush the steps.

It is also for this reason that we advise starting this training as early as possible. This way, you will be ready for the day your dog actually needs to wear a muzzle.

How long can a dog wear a muzzle?

For as short a time as possible.

The duration depends entirely on the situation.

For example:

• a few minutes during a vet visit;
• several hours during a train journey if regulations require it;
• the time necessary to work on a behavioral exercise in complete safety.

Outside of these situations, there is no reason for your dog to wear a muzzle.
